Peridex is a prescription-strength mouthwash containing 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate. It is used for severely irritated gums, after oral surgery, after deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), or in cases of significant gingivitis. Chlorhexidine is antimicrobial and reduces the bacterial load in the mouth, which supports healing of inflamed or post-surgical tissue.
For best results, use Peridex after brushing. The standard regimen is to swish for 30 seconds twice per day and then spit it out. Do not eat or drink for 30 minutes afterward, and do not rinse the mouth with water afterward — both shorten the contact time of the medication. Do not swallow.
Peridex is intended for short-term use (typically 14 days). Long-term continuous use can cause brown surface staining of the teeth and may temporarily affect taste; both are reversible with professional cleaning once the course is complete.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I use Peridex?
Standard prescriptions are for 14 days. Long-term continuous use can stain the teeth and affect taste. Your dentist may prescribe a second course after a break.
Does Peridex stain teeth?
It can cause brown surface staining with prolonged use. The staining is reversible with professional cleaning. The benefit (rapid bacterial reduction) usually outweighs the staining for short courses.
