Orthopulse by Biolux Research is a low-level light therapy (LLLT) device — also called photobiomodulation — used to help accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. It works alongside braces, in-office clear aligners (Invisalign, Spark, and ClearCorrect), and at-home aligner systems like Byte, Candid, and other direct-to-consumer brands.

Inside the mouthpiece, an array of LEDs delivers near-infrared light at approximately 850 nm. This wavelength is thought to stimulate cellular activity in the bone surrounding the teeth — particularly osteoclast and osteoblast activity, the cells that drive bone remodeling and tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. By supporting that biological process, Orthopulse can help teeth move more efficiently.

The device is FDA-cleared, non-invasive, and painless. It is worn for 5 minutes per arch — a total of 10 minutes per day if both arches are being treated. The companion app tracks usage so you and your provider can see your daily progress.

Orthopulse is rechargeable and small enough to use at home or while traveling. It is intended as a daily adjunct throughout active orthodontic treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Orthopulse actually work?

Peer-reviewed studies on photobiomodulation at the wavelength Orthopulse uses report meaningful reductions in orthodontic treatment time when used daily as directed. Individual results vary by patient and case complexity.

Orthopulse vs VPro5 — which is better?

Both are professional orthodontic accelerators. The main practical differences are:

  • Vibration vs light: VPro5 uses high-frequency vibration; Orthopulse uses light. Some patients can't tolerate vibration (vertigo, head spins) — for them, Orthopulse is the better option.
  • Time of use: VPro5 is 5 minutes total per day (vibrates both arches at once when bitten). Orthopulse is 5 minutes per arch — 10 minutes total if both arches are being treated.

If vibration isn't an issue, the choice comes down to personal preference and cost.

Do I need a prescription?

No prescription is required. Orthopulse is, however, a professional product — meaning it is sold only through dental and orthodontic practices, not through non-dentist consumer vendors. It is intended as a daily adjunct to orthodontic treatment and works with braces, in-office clear aligners (Invisalign, Spark, ClearCorrect), and at-home aligner brands like Byte or Candid.
