Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a common condition that can lead to a range of uncomfortable and potentially serious health problems. When the mouth lacks sufficient saliva, it can become dry and uncomfortable, leading to mouth sores, irritated soft tissue and gums, and an increased risk of tooth decay. Dry mouth can also cause bad breath and make it difficult to speak or swallow comfortably.

Many medications (anti-depressants, anti-histamines, antihypertensives, antipsychotics, etc.), long-term CPAP machine use for sleep apnea, mouth breathing, Sjögren's disease, head & neck cancer treatment, medical marijuana use, uncontrolled diabetes, and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or ALS can all reduce saliva production and contribute to xerostomia.

SalivaMAX is a supersaturated calcium phosphate rinse — chemically the closest thing to natural saliva — that helps moisten the mouth and reduce the risk of dry-mouth complications. It is available both as a prescription for severe dry mouth and over-the-counter for mild-to-moderate dry mouth. The rinse promotes remineralization of the teeth and buffers the pH of the mouth, which can be beneficial in addressing enamel demineralization (cavity formation) or mucositis (inflammation of the lining inside the mouth) associated with reduced saliva.

SalivaMAX also helps address bad breath that often accompanies dry mouth — the rinse helps wash away food particles and bacteria that contribute to odors, and improves the comfort of swallowing and speaking.

Each box contains 30 packets of supersaturated calcium phosphate. To use, dissolve one packet in 1 oz of water (about 1/8 of a glass), then swish half of the solution thoroughly around your entire mouth for 1 minute, spit, and repeat with the remaining half. Use the entire packet within 3 minutes of dissolving for maximum effectiveness. There is no synthetic flavor — when dissolved in water, it tastes like water.

Most users notice relief from dry mouth within a few days, though full effects may take up to a week.

Note: this product may contain sodium. Consult your physician if you are on a salt-restricted diet or if increased salt intake could worsen a condition such as heart failure or high blood pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I use it?

Depends on the dryness severity. Typically 3–4 packets per day for mild-to-moderate dry mouth, and up to 10 packets per day for severe cases. Each packet's relief effect lasts about 60–70 minutes.

SalivaMAX vs Biotene vs Xerostom — what is the difference?

Biotene is over-the-counter and uses lactoperoxidase enzymes for short-term moisture. Xerostom is a glycerol-based gel. SalivaMAX is supersaturated calcium phosphate — chemically the closest to natural saliva — and is the only one of the three that actively remineralizes enamel while moistening.

Do I need a prescription?

SalivaMAX is available as both a prescription (for severe dry mouth) and over-the-counter (for mild-to-moderate cases). Soothing Dental's team can review your eligibility through a brief telehealth screen — a complimentary Rx review is included.
